final exam extra credit

1. Explain what happened to the man that was killed by the subway and how the photographer was able to take the photo.
The man in the picture was pushed by a panhandler into the tracks after he tried to calm down the panhandler, as he was harassing a passerby.

2. Why did the photographer say he took the photo?

The photographer said he was actually just using his flash to try to grab the conductors attention, to get him to stop the subway, not necessarily trying to take a picture.

3. Do you think the photographer should have taken the photo?

I'm going to say no. I don't know how far he was from the man but based on the photo it looks like he could have been saved. I think if the photographer was not trying to grab the attention of the conductor and was instead trying to save the man, his life could have been saved. Not necessarily for the ethics of the photo but ethics of life. If this was the photographer's response and he was too far to grab the man and yell for someone closer to help, then it's fine. It looks like he's close enough to truly pull him.

4. Do you think the photographer did the best thing he could have done in this situation? Why or why not?

I think if the photographer was not trying to grab the attention of the conductor and was instead trying to save the man, his life could have been saved. I'd say no. He could have yelled for help or tried to run fast to get to him. It doesn't look like there's much movement from him in the photo.

5. Do you agree or disagree with the decision to run the photo on the front page of the New York Post? Explain why or why not.
I'd say no. It's a picture that leads to something very gruesome and our imaginations get the best of us, having this on the front page leads to a bad taste. I think it could be okay in the inner pages of the paper but on the front is a lack of respect for everyone, especially the man who died and his family, he's not just a picture.

6. What is more important to a photojournalist, capturing images of life as it happens or stopping bad things from happen
ing? Why or why not?
Capturing images of life happening. Journalist are invested in capturing stories not stopping them. It's not usually right for morality purposes, if you can do something.

7. Do you think it is ever ethically acceptable for a photographer to involve himself/herself in a situation that he or she photographs? Explain why or why not.
Yes. We're all allowed to have our own opinions so if you believe you are doing the best thing by getting involved, okay. If you involve yourself in a story and you are good at capturing the story, then involve yourself so you can explain it to others. It's a photographer's decision though.

8. Should photojournalists always avoid influencing events as they happen? Explain your answer.
Depending on ethics. If it's better for you to change the story because of ethics, do so. I don't think photojournalists should be afraid. If you see someone being held over a bridge and you're close to capture pictures but for the sake of a greater good, if you can intervene then do so. If you need to punch someone in the face to protect someone else, like the person who was dangling over a bridge, change the story. Life is not all a story, there is right and wrong.

9. After reading the responses from the professional photographers, what stands out as the most appropriate response for a photographer to this situation.
Not to photograph pictures that lead to doom as most do not agree with it.

Using a projector

Link the website you visited and make sure your blog is titled the same as the links above.
https://petapixel.com/2015/01/01/projector-brought-forest-turns-nature-glowing-wonderland/

Briefly describe what you looked at on the website (2-3 sentences, make sure you write enough to really make it clear that you spent time looking at the website).
The website showed the behind the scenes of a project made by two men to see what the outcome would be of them projecting lights onto nature. They took a projector into the forest and made a film.

What did you learn new?
If there's no harm in trying something new within nature, you should go for it. Nature as a subject is very broad but you can find ways to add even more beauty and life to it artistically.

If possible, post your favorite photo from the site.
Screen Shot 2015-01-01 at 12.20.31 PM
If you have a photo to post, please answer the following questions:
a.     Why did you pick this photo?
I chose this photo because I liked the colors and in the film I felt like it was one of the most artistic pieces because the light moved on the mushrooms as though it was a water droplet.
b.     What rules of photography do you see in the photo?
I see the frame is focused on the mushrooms, so simplicity, although it's not that simple.
c.     Who took the photo?
Tarek Mawad

If you looked at a video, please do the following:
a.     Describe what you saw in the video.
In the video you get to see the camera and projector setup that the animator and photographer used in order to capture the light from the projector. You also see how they edited where they wanted the lights to go.
b.     Try to figure out who made the video. If it was a photographer look them up on google and see if you can learn more about them.
Tarek Mawad
c.     If there is a story about the video on the website, paraphrase it in 2-3 sentences.
You learn that they spent 6 weeks on the project and it was meant to accentuate the natural beauty of nature. The artists were interested in the silent beauty of nature.
d.     What did you learn new?
They also made other films, such as Lucid. The films are meant to capture nature and landscapes.

Great portraits

Link the website you visited and make sure your blog is titled the same as the links above.
https://www.picturecorrect.com/tips/how-to-take-great-portraits/

Briefly describe what you looked at on the website (2-3 sentences, make sure you write enough to really make it clear that you spent time looking at the website).
I learned different elements to put into a portrait in order to make it be a good one, like capturing your subject's personality in the picture. Location is also important in capturing personality, have your subject in a comfortable environment so that you avoid an awkward essence that isn't theirs.

What did you learn new?
Personality is the key element when taking a portrait to make it special.

If possible, post your favorite photo from the site.

Briefly describe what you looked at on the website (2-3 sentences, make sure you write enough to really make it clear that you spent time looking at the website).
The website demonstrated a series of pictures taken by German photographer, Christian Richter, all consisting of abandoned spiral staircases he found in abandoned buildings. He explored these buildings when he began taking photos.

What did you learn new?
I learned that you can find things to photograph in unconventional places, places not yet thought of which make your photos unique.

If possible, post your favorite photo from the site.

6 Types of Photos Every Photographer Should Know How to Make

Link the website you visited and make sure your blog is titled the same as the links above.
http://petapixel.com/2014/12/01/6-types-photos-know-make/

Briefly describe what you looked at on the website (2-3 sentences, make sure you write enough to really make it clear that you spent time looking at the website).
The website was teaching you how to do different techniques in photography that can make your photos look more creative. You learn how to make these photos successful, such as having a small aperture and a fast shutter speed to freeze motion.
What did you learn new?
I learned about different kinds of techniques that I can use, possibly even in the portrait project, to make my photos stand out. I especially liked the forced perspective photo because it shows you that it isn't too complicated to create an illusion.
If possible, post your favorite photo from the site.

The photographer, Harry Benson, took this photo of The Beatles, John, Paul, Ringo, and George, after they found out that their song "I Want to Hold Your Hand" hit No.1 in America and began celebrating. Benson originally did not want to photograph The Beatles because he thought it was unimportant but he later felt happy that he was assigned the task.

Magazines part 2

Image based covers have one or few people on the cover, usually smiling. This is the most common type of magazine cover pages. In image based magazines the photo has to match with the style of the publication. Illustration based magazines have drawn illustrations as their cover page, like The New Yorker. Publications that use Illustration based cover pages are usually independently published and don't rely on newsstands to sell their product. Type based magazine covers rely on type, either computer generated or handwritten, this is very rare but is becoming more popular.Type presents the words to grab a reader's attention. Concept based magazine covers can be a mix of all the other themes. They have to be instantly understandable and powerful. They are funny, witty, or impactful and are designed to pack a powerful punch, in order to get a reader to open the magazine.

Finally, what is the relationship between words and photos on magazine covers and why is this important?

Photos on a cover are what grab a reader's attention and its name should be recognizable to readers, so don't change the design. The words on a magazine say what a magazine is about so the cover page should be related.

Favorite Cover

Favorite:
Inspiring magazine covers
Martin Schoeller photographed Orange Is the New Black actress Uzo Aduba for the June 2015 cover of Stylist. The close up of Aduba’s face – with eyes squeezed shut and grin gap-toothed and joyful – is magnetic and jubilant.

This is my favorite portrait because I feel emotion conveyed from it. I also recognize the person on the cover and the way I feel about her adds to the emotion felt from the picture. I can feel her smile radiating from this picture and it makes me smile as well. The photographer followed the composition of simplicity by using a blank background, making the subject pop and dragged attention to her smile by putting a bright color on her lips. The lighting focuses on the center of her face, bringing the subtitle into view, then to her lips. Overall, the photographer used lighting and composition rules well to bring out the subject and her detailed smile.

-using a wide angle
-hold your camera at an angle

Environmental portrait:
Image result for environmental portrait
I liked this photo because there are props in it but you still have a focal point of a man's smiling face.
You can also see the environment around him.

Image result for environmental portrait
I like this photo because the subject is very immersed in her environment but you can tell that she's the subject.

Photography self portrait:

I chose this picture because I liked that the use of movement caught my attention.

Casual portrait:
Image result for casual portrait
I liked this picture because I like how there seems to be a sort of effect, but made by lights, which makes the picture look more creative. I like the colors in it too.
Image result for casual portrait

I like this photo because of the eye contact. I feel as though I'm looking at this woman in person and I like the lighting.

Answer the following questions: who will you shoot, where will you shoot, and what will you do to make the shot successful.

For the portrait assignment I will take pictures of my little brother, either in his room or somewhere on my front lawn for lighting purposes and for having a simple background. To make the shot successful I'll make sure to incorporate interesting props, if it's a picture that is not focused on his face and I'll make sure to keep the camera in focus.

American Soldier

A. What is the most powerful image from the pictures printed in the Denver Post over the three weeks they published images from the year of coverage? Why?

I believe that this is the most powerful images because from the caption you can tell that Ian Fisher is struggling a lot internally. He has problems at home and in the army and it shows through the picture that he is hurting. I think this picture was the most powerful because it was the most personal, almost everyone can relate to the feeling of pain.

B. How do the images work together to tell a story?
The images work together to tell a story by being in chronological order and having detailed captions. The captions tell you what's happening and they all work together with their subject.

C. How do the captions enhance the photographs?
The captions enhance the photographs because we don't have to guess what's happening, we can now tell what's happening and can look at the picture with the story.

D. Summarize the story of Ian Fisher, based just on the captions.
Ian Fisher enlisted in the Army at age 17 and spent almost 2 years affiliated with it. He had struggles with drugs, romantic relationships, and with the army. He was able to overcome many of the struggles and had a support system at home. By the end of his enlistment, he came home to his mother and married his girlfriend.

E. For the photos in which Ian is the main subject of the photos, in what tense are the verbs usually written?
They are usually written in present tense.

F. Break down the captions:

1. How many sentences are they on average? On average, there are around 3 sentences in each caption.

The lowest number of sentences I saw were 2.

2. Read the first sentence of a couple of them, what information do they provide?

They usually provide the date or the location.

3. Read the second sentences of a couple of them, what information do they provide?

What is happening, or a quote.

4. If there is a third sentence, what information does it provide?

Usually a quote, stating what someone believes about what is happening in the first caption.

5. Do any captions include a quote?

Yes, many do.

6. Are there any that have four sentences?
Yes, there are many that have four sentences.

G. Why do you think it is possible to tell a complete story with just photos and captions?
You can visualize what is happening and see what people are feeling, or how they're acting. When you read the captions it tells you directly what to believe and you see the full picture. You just keep adding to the story.

H. If you can create a story with just photos and captions, why bother writing a story at all?

I think you should write a story because you'll be able to share more details and go more in depth.

EXTRA CREDIT:
Please read the story across those three papers

1. Briefly summarize the story of Ian Fisher. Please break this down by publish date. This means I want three separate summaries of a paragraph for each of the three days the paper published the story.

September 11, 2009: Ian Fisher enlisted in the US Army at age 17 and was set on fighting after he graduated. Fischer decided to fight due to his ability and interest to fight hand to hand but also because of his patriotism to his country. He had emotional goodbyes with his friends and family but saw the Army as his best option. Ian had very close bonds to his friends and to his father which made his departure very emotional. He arrived at Fort Benning and began with drills which made him exhausted, physically and emotionally. Ian was also dealing with an elbow injury. During basic training, a main concern for sergeants was to teach morals to the recruits; there were many discipline issues. Eventually, the recruits shaped up and worked together.

September 12, 2009:Ian begins having more problems because he is distracted with home life in the midst of his training. He begins to abuse drugs. But he tries to find solutions with his father, Eric. Eric says maybe he shouldn't come home so often. In training, he starts being a leader and helps other recruits. He got engaged to a girl named Kristen and was readying himself to be deployed to Iraq. He is eventually deployed to Iraq after changing platoons due to issues with his platoon leaders.

September 13, 2009: Fisher has been deployed to Iraq and faces days of boredom and days of anxiety. He learns how to drive a Humvee. Eventually, Ian begins patrolling a part of Iraq and faces Iraqi attacks. He was able to go back home for a two week break and rekindled his relationships with a newfound maturity. By the end of his deployment he is more matured, he gets married to Devin and is ready to be responsible in life.

2. What was his motivation for joining the military?
He wanted to be productive, continue a family legacy (his father served in Vietnam), and fight for his country.

3. What kind of problems did he encounter during basic training?

He encountered problems with fighting, many would fight each other and all would have consequences. Ian also wanted to quit many times but remembered his purpose so he stayed.

4. What part of Ian's pre-military life caused him the most problems as he was being trained and while on deployment?

His two worlds were crashing together, his old party life and family, with his new disciplined Army life. His development as a soldier was not fully focused because his old old life was nearby, he was distracted.

5. What happened when Ian had a mid-tour break and returned home?

He rekindled his relationship with Devin and things within their relationship started up again.

6. How did Iraq change Ian?

Iraq made Ian more mature and responsible.
